The most straightforward beach in Kenya, and we say that plainly
Diani is seventeen kilometres of wide, white, palm-backed sand south of Mombasa, and it is the Kenyan coast’s most developed stretch — the largest choice of hotels, the best watersports infrastructure, direct international charters into Ukunda, and a reef far enough offshore to make the swimming easy at any tide.
That development is the trade. Diani is busier and more built than Watamu, considerably more so than Lamu, and it has less character than either. What it has instead is convenience, reliability and range: you can find a large family resort, a small boutique hotel or a private villa within a mile of each other.
Behind the beach sits the Diani forest, home to around 500 Angolan colobus and a long-running conservation project that built the colobridges — rope bridges across the coast road — after road deaths became the primary cause of mortality. It is a fifteen-minute detour and worth it.

The widest choice on the coast — and where we would actually stay
Diani has more hotels than the rest of the Kenyan coast combined, and most of them are not for our guests. What we do use: two small boutique hotels at the quieter southern end, three private villas on the beach with staff, and one large resort that is genuinely excellent for families with young children.
The southern end, towards Galu and Kinondo, is markedly quieter than the central strip and where we place almost everyone. The northern end near Ukunda is convenient for the airstrip and noisier.
If a guest wants character over convenience, we would send them to Lamu or Watamu instead and say so on the telephone. Diani earns its place when flights, children or a short trip make the decision.

Access
The easiest beach in Kenya to reach: a 75-minute flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip and fifteen minutes by road, with international charters landing directly at Ukunda in season. Direct charters from the Mara strips take around 100 minutes, so no Nairobi night is needed.
What you pay to enter
There is no beach or park fee. Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is USD 17 per person per day, Colobus Conservation USD 15, and Shimba Hills National Reserve USD 30. All are included in every AETHER journey and itemised on your invoice.
Before you go
Hot and humid — 30 to 33°C with heavy humidity. Malaria risk on the coast is higher than inland and prophylaxis matters here. Beach hawkers are persistent on the central strip and almost absent at the southern end, which is one reason we place guests there.

Water sports, a marine park and the colobus
Kitesurfing. From July to September the kusi monsoon makes Diani one of the better kite spots in the Indian Ocean, with three schools we would use and shallow, forgiving water. Beginners can learn in a week.
Kisite-Mpunguti, an hour south by dhow off Wasini island, is the best snorkelling within reach of Diani — clearer than the home reef, with dolphins on the crossing most mornings and a Swahili lunch on the island.
Colobus Conservation. A fifteen-minute visit that changes how you see the coast road: 28 rope bridges, a rehabilitation centre, and a project that has cut colobus road deaths substantially since 1997.
Shimba Hills, 45 minutes inland — sable antelope found nowhere else in Kenya, elephant, and Sheldrick falls reached on a short walk. A genuine half-day safari from the beach, which is unusual anywhere.

Fly in from the bush
A direct charter from the Mara or Amboseli to Ukunda, then fifteen minutes to the southern end of the beach. Nothing else scheduled.
The beach, and nothing
Swimming, the pool, and a dhow at sunset. Kitesurfing lessons instead, if you are here between July and September.
Kisite by dhow
An hour south to Wasini and the marine park — the best snorkelling on this coast, dolphins on the crossing, and lunch on the island.
Shimba Hills, or nothing
A half-day inland for sable antelope, elephant and Sheldrick falls — or the colobus project and then the pool. Both are reasonable.

The Masai Mara, 100 minutes by air. The standard bush-and-beach shape, direct from the conservancy strips.
Tsavo, one hour. The closest big-game park to this beach, and the cheapest way to add a safari leg to a coastal holiday.
Shimba Hills, 45 minutes by road. Sable antelope and a waterfall, doable as a day trip from the beach.
Watamu, 2½ hours by road. Better reef and quieter sand up the coast, if you would rather have the water than the infrastructure.
On Diani
Should we choose Diani or Watamu?
Watamu for the reef, the turtles, the forest and a quieter coast — our recommendation for most guests. Diani for the easiest flights, the widest hotel choice, the best watersports and the most forgiving swimming for small children.
Is it too developed?
The central strip is busy and has persistent beach hawkers. The southern end towards Galu and Kinondo is quiet, and that is where we place almost every guest. If development troubles you at all, go to Lamu.
When is the kitesurfing?
July to September, when the kusi monsoon blows reliably. Three schools here are good and the water is shallow and forgiving enough for a beginner to stand up within a week.
Can we do a safari from the beach?
Yes — Shimba Hills is 45 minutes inland for sable antelope and elephant, and Tsavo East is an hour by road. Neither replaces a proper safari, and both are a genuine half or full day.
Is it good for children?
It is the best beach in Kenya for young children: wide sand, a reef far enough out for calm shallow water, short flights, and the one large family resort on the coast we actually rate.
