Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro, the two tallest mountains in Africa. Does just the mere mention of these world-famous peaks set your mind spinning with fantasies of an ascending adventure, scaling the higher reaches of our atmosphere? Do you see yourself climbing those final feet to the summit, standing atop the world, surveying your domain below?
If so, you’re one of the intrepid few that is excited by such a physical and emotional challenge. You probably want to know more about how to begin your African mountaineering adventure – the logistics, the routes, the gear, the prep… the food.
At Africa Kenya Safaris, we have arranged for so many like you to take this adventurous leap up to the higher reaches of our planet. Here, we will answer some of your many questions on how to launch your personal journey to these two celebrated summits.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro?
First off, Kili is climbable all year round. But the best months are July to October and December to February, as these are the warmest and driest months.
Also, something you might not have thought about is summiting Kili on a moonlit night. Sure, you can do it with your headlamp, but trekking to the peak by moonlight only adds to the magic, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.
Can I Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro Without a Guide or Porter?
In a word – no. It is illegal and foolhardy to try. Though Kili is not a technical climb, that is, you don’t need ropes… it is not an easy climb. And you’ll require the well-earned expertise of your mountaineering professionals to make it to the top.
How Tough A Climb is Kilimanjaro?
As mentioned, this is not a technical climb but it still is a challenge. You’ll be trekking for 5 or 6 days, 5 – 7 hours per day, mostly uphill, and the higher you go, the thinner the air. And the colder it gets.
You’ll need to acclimatize, to get used to the higher elevations of over 3,000 m/10,000 ft. This is not only a physical but a mental challenge as well. Physically prepping for this adventure is a must.
What Are The Most Popular Routes Up Kilimanjaro?
The Marangu Route is the most popular as the ascent is gradual and you’ll have mountain huts along the route, in which to sleep – no need for tents on this trail.
While it is a tougher climb, the Machame Route, is probably the most scenic way to the top. You’ll be staying in tents and the trek is strenuous.
How Do I Physically Prepare For The Climb?
Hopefully, you’re already doing some kind of aerobic activity on a regular basis. Either way, get serious about your training at least three months before your climb.
Run, swim, or cycle. And additionally, hike, increasing your training as the climb approaches. The more in shape you are, the better your chances of making it to the top.
Should I Use Walking Poles During My Climb?
We recommend them. They improve your power and stamina going uphill as your upper body assists your legs to move your body mass. Your energy is distributed more evenly.
Going downhill, the poles help reduce the forces on your knees and hips, making for a more controlled descent.
Will My Cell Phone Work During the Climb?
Yes… and no. Your signal will fluctuate but you will be able to intermittently use your phone.
Hopefully, this is just the start of our climbing conversation. We’re sure you have lots more questions and we’ll be happy to answer them all as we welcome you to our world of African safari and mountain climbing adventures. So come join us up on the big hill.
